THE CHRISTIAN AND POLITICS.

Bro. Oke Preacher, COC Leo Akure.

Introduction
The relationship between Christianity and politics has long been a subject of debate among believers. Some Christians avoid politics entirely, believing it to be corrupt, while others see it as a platform to influence society for righteousness. This topic examines the role of Christians in politics, guided by biblical teachings and principles.
1. Definition of Politics and Christian Responsibility
Politics refers to the governance of a society, including decision-making processes, leadership, and public policies. As members of society, Christians are not exempt from civic responsibility.
Biblical Foundation
Romans 13:1–2 – “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers…”
1 Peter 2:13–14 – Christians are called to submit to governing authorities.
These passages show that government authority is ordained by God, and Christians are expected to respect and engage with it responsibly.
2. The Christian as a Citizen
Christians have dual citizenship: earthly and heavenly.
Biblical Balance
Philippians 3:20 “Our citizenship is in heaven…”
Matthew 22:21 “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s…”
This means Christians should fulfill civic duties (such as voting, obeying laws, and contributing to society) while maintaining loyalty to God above all.
3. Participation in Politics
The Bible does not forbid political involvement. In fact, several biblical figures held governmental positions.
Examples
Joseph (Genesis 41:39–41) Served as a leader in Egypt.
Daniel (Daniel 6:1–3) Held high office in Babylon.
Esther (Esther 4:14) Influenced political decisions for God’s purpose.
These examples show that God can use believers in political positions to accomplish His will.
4. Christians as Salt and Light in Politics
Christians are called to influence the world positively.
Biblical Mandate
Matthew 5:13–16 “You are the salt of the earth… the light of the world.”
In politics, this means:
1. Promoting justice and fairness.
1. Standing against corruption
1. Defending the oppressed
5. Obedience vs. Disobedience to Government
While Christians are to obey authorities, there are limits.
When Obedience is Required
Romans 13:3–4 Authorities are ministers of God for good.
When Disobedience is Necessary
Acts 5:29 – “We ought to obey God rather than men.”
If government laws contradict God’s commands, Christians must choose God’s will.
6. Dangers in Politics for Christians
Politics can expose believers to moral and spiritual risks.
Key Dangers
1. Corruption and bribery (Exodus 23:8)
1. Compromise of faith (Mark 8:36)
1. Pride and abuse of power (Proverbs 16:18)
Christians must remain vigilant and grounded in Scripture.
7. The Role of Prayer in Politics
Prayer is a powerful tool for influencing leadership and national direction.
Biblical Instruction
1 Timothy 2:1–2 Pray for kings and all in authority.
Prayer helps:
1. Promote peace
1. Guide leaders
1. Align national policies with God’s will
8. The Christian’s Ethical Responsibility
Christians in politics must uphold integrity.
Biblical Standards
Micah 6:8 – Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly.
Proverbs 11:3 – Integrity guides the upright.
Ethical leadership reflects God’s character.
Conclusion
The Christian and politics are not mutually exclusive. Christians are called to engage in society responsibly, including political processes, while maintaining their spiritual identity and obedience to God. Through righteous participation, prayer, and integrity, believers can influence politics positively and fulfill their role as salt and light in the world.
Additional Bible Passages for Study
Proverbs 29:2 – Righteous leadership brings joy
Psalm 33:12 – Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord
Ecclesiastes 10:2 – Wisdom in leadership
