Comedy and Worldly Entertainment In The Churches

COMEDY AND WORLDLY ENTERTAINMENT  IN THE CHURCH
By Lolu Akinwunmi

I'd made a few comments on this subject in the past. Today I will like to deepen those comments. For sure a few will take me up on this, but let's see how it goes.

I watched a few video clips of comedians within church services, Pentecostal churches, and I observed the following:

•Very inappropriate jokes for a house of God and a holy assembly
•It was obvious some of the comedians were not believers. The casual bantering involving the third Person in the Trinity was shocking
•Mocking and mimicry of speaking in tongues
•Jesting with very serious holy accounts in the Bible

I concluded that the Church has gone too far and these things must stop. How did we get here? This practice was introduced by the Pentecostals as part of entertainment and the belief that you can match what they are doing "out there" and so be able to attract and hold on to people. The New Testament church grew and had quality membership because they prayed and lived holy lives.

But what is the Church supposed to be? According to the Owner of the Church, it's His Father's House of Prayer and Worship. If you trace from the Old Testament, congregating together to worship was a very holy affair with strict rules. It was never a joking matter. Indeed God warns against jesting and coarse jokes!

Come to the New Testament and go to Acts 1. The assembly was holy and for prayers, such that the buildings often  shook. Gathering together of believers is supposed to be for fellowship: worship, prayers, Bible study, meetings on how to support the brethren and others. Certainly not for the coarse jokes we hear these days.

Same goes for the musical concerts. You watch and wonder. Inappropriate dressing and conduct. The only thing that shows it's a Christian assembly are the lyrics of songs. Christianity has rules on modesty and behaviour. At some of the musical concerts the rules fly out of the windows. People talk of liberty! But it's not a visa for inappropriate behaviour.

There is a spirit of error in operation: THE CHURCH WANTS TO ACHIEVE WITH ENTERTAINMENT WHAT GOD SAYS CAN ONLY BE ACHIEVED THROUGH PRAYERS AND HOLY LIVING.

The other day a popular singer was asked why she always revealed her breasts. The joker responded that God was not interested in such things but her heart and that she goes to church dressed this way. Can you see what manner of Christians we are breeding? A very popular Pastor on YouTube defended masturbation and didn't see anything sinful about it. Can you also see?

I envy those who take their faiths seriously. Can you imagine a Basket Mouth in any mosque? Certainly Pentecostal Christians have taken things too far. It's time to go back to what God ordained. No church should use these fetches: comedy, curious musical festivals where there is no attention to worship and the response is no different from where a Micheal Jackson would have been performing. Can you imagine Ali Baba casting jokes on the altar of the Cathedral in Marina?

Muslims dont joke with their faith. And so everyone respects them. Christians complain that Islam is taking over and I laugh. Why not? Muslims are serious and committed. Many Christians are not. Do you win and retain souls, do you proselyte with jokes mocking your faith? So how can others respect your faith when you and your Pastors spend hours laughing at jokes that insult God and mock the faith?

Let's have fun by all means. Let's laugh. Let's dance. But let's remember that we are still Christians. God demands holiness from us in conduct, language, all. Lets be reverent of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Let's stop bringing comedians to holy assemblies. Let's stop bringing worldly music into places of prayer and worship. The church is NOT for entertainment. Services must be for instruction and edification. These things don't achieve these purposes.

If any Pastor does not agree, then he or she is free to open a club house for comedies and music. It's allowed. But let's stop bringing worldly behaviour into God's presence.

God will move only through prayers and worship and not through these worldly entertainments.
