ENDURING VALUE.

Enduring Value
“Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt 6:20-21).

Jesus challenges us to invest in spiritual values, in heavenly riches, that will endure forever. A wise investor knows what is most valuable, which is that with enduring value. It is foolish, in fact downright silly, to invest everything we have in this fleeting world. It’s like buying a sand castle as a retirement home. “The form of this world is passing away” (1 Cor 7:31).
Only the things of God, the intangible spiritual things that pertain to the soul, will last forever because they constitute ultimate reality.
With some recent tornadoes in north Alabama, we are again reminded that our physical possessions can be gone in an instant. John Gibson preaches for the Lord’s church that meets on Pepper Rd. in east Limestone Co. He recently had his house devastated by a tornado on March 2nd. Yet, he preached two days later on Sunday and WAAY31 local news thought such was significant enough that they did a news story about it. In his sermon about brotherly love, it was emphasized how richly blessed we are to be surrounded by encouraging, caring Christians. In fact, last year a brother in Christ whose house was totally blown away told me that one of the best things that he learned through the ordeal was how incredibly uplifting it was to see so many brethren who genuinely cared and helped.
In time of physical loss, our hearts are often reminded of what is most important in life. Jesus promised if we forsake all to follow Him, that we will have spiritual riches of “a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life” (Mk 10:30). The precious value of heavenly riches, secure in heaven and with a foretaste in the church, cannot be destroyed by any physical force in this world.
“There is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him” (Rom 10:12).
